2008-2009 Season Outlook
With the 2008-2009 basketball season right around the corner, expectations are high for the Robert Morris-Springfield Lady Eagles. Coming off of a 5th place finish at the USCAA National Tournament last season, the Lady Eagles return five players to go along with a solid recruiting class. Coach David Heeb, in his 2nd season, believes this team can have the same type of success that the women’s basketball program at Robert Morris-Springfield has enjoyed in the past, finishing in the top five at the USCAA National Tournament in five of the past six years.
Leading the way will be a trio of senior Academic All-Americans. Stephanie Brake (Independence, KY) played in every game, made 31 starts, led the team in scoring (12.4) and was named USCAA Honorable Mention All-American. Lindsey Rogers (Quincy, IL) also played and started in every game, was also one of the top scorers on the team (11.7) as well as the USCAA national leader in 3-point field goals (97). LaTonya Boyd (Louisville, KY) also played in every game, made 31 starts as the offensive and defensive catalyst from her point guard position, leading the team in assists (3.2), and ranking second in steals (1.8).
Two other Lady Eagles saw plenty of action last season, sophomore Latoya Gipson (Sikeston, MO) and junior Meranda Reed (LaHarpe, IL). Gipson played in every game, making 15 starts as a true freshman, averaging 7.2 points and 3.4 rebounds per game. Reed also saw action in every game as a key defensive stopper for the Lady Eagles.
The recruiting class is deep and talented. In the backcourt competition for playing time will be fierce between ultra quick transfer Jasmine Mack (Rend Lake Community College), high scoring freshman Kyisha Ricks (Caruthersville, MO), and multi-talented freshman Tiara Perry (Maywood, IL). In addition, the late inclusions of transfer sophomore Clarissa Parrow (Spoon River College) and freshman Asia Richards (Rockwood, IL) make the Lady Eagles backcourt as deep and talented as ever.
The frontcourt received similar help with the addition of four outstanding freshmen. Tanesha Parker (Belleville, IL) is a top-notch defender and rebounder, Ashli Silverthorne (Mackinaw, IL) brings size and versatility, Gloria Hernandez (Portage, IN) also brings a reputation for scoring and rebounding, and Amanda Phillips (Alton, IL) brings size, rebounding, and shot blocking ability.
“I am very exited about the potential of this team,” stated Coach Heeb. “We have a good combination of size and quickness, we have some shooters, and we have some kids that I think will play really good defense. More importantly, I think this team has good character. If everyone makes a sincere commitment to do the necessary work we should have a great season.”
